Tritons Reign Supreme!

2008 NWAACC Baseball Champions

 

The Edmonds Community College baseball team beat Lower Columbia College twice on Monday, May 26 to win the 2008 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) baseball championship. The Tritons beat Lower Columbia 6-4 in the championship game, just hours after beating the Red Devils 4-3 in 13 innings to qualify for the title game. First year head coach Brad Ditter was also named NWAACC coach of the year!

The Tritons Baseball Team headed to the championships tournament May 22-26 at David Story Field in Longview, WA after defeating the Everett Community College Trojans 12-6 to win the North Region Baseball Championship May 12 in a home game at Seaview Field.  After a hard fought 5-2 victory in the first game of the series, the Triton's bats exploded for 12 runs off of 14 hits while committing no errors in the second and final game of the afternoon. 

Led by first year Head Coach Brad Ditter and assistants Adam Roberts, Scott Watson, Ron Omori and Shaun Cole, the Tritons excelled over the other teams in the NWAACC while compiling the second best overall win/loss record (33-8) out of 27 teams, before going on to win the championship.

Paris Shewey signs with Washington State Cougars,

Paris Shewey (Redmond High School) of the 2008 NWAACC title baseball team for join the Washington State Baseball team in the fall of 2008.  Shewey spent just one year as a Triton before moving onto the Pac-10.  Paris was a huge part of the title run posting a 2-2 record with 9 saves.  Shewey will join former EDCC Head Coach Don Marbutt who was also Coach Ditter’s head coach during his title run in 2002.  “We feel like we got the top left hander out of the NWAACC, we are very excited to have Paris as part of our program.” Don Marbutt said

“I just want to congratulate Paris for this great accomplishment.  He earned every bit of the opportunity with the year he had” said coach Ditter

 

Shewey won’t be the only Triton moving on to the D-1 Ranks.  Starting pitcher Tyler Rogstad (Inglemoor High School) will be attending University of Reno for the 2009 season.  Rogstad posted a 5-2 record with a 2.50 era.

“Tyler was absolutely outstanding for the Triton baseball team for two years.  I believe he saved his best game for Mt. Hood in NWAACC tournament and put us in the title game” stated coach Ditter.

 

Ben Thielsen (Lake Washington High School) the 5th Triton Shortstop in a row to move onto play D-1 baseball decided on North Carolina Wilmington University.  UNCW baseball program was ranked as high as 18th in the country last year and was a two seed in regional play.  Thielsen was a two time all northern division and all NWAACC selection.

 

Northern Region MVP Nick Meehan “Seattle Lutheran” has chosen Jamestown University in North Dakota.  Jamestown in NAIA and are a yearly NAIA World Series contender.  Meehan, a former walk-on, led the northern Division in hitting with a .421 average.

First Team all Northern Region pitcher Tyler Rice (Gig Harbor) will also be going with Meehan to Jamestown.

 

NWAACC Tournament MVP Dan Ninomiya (Woodinville) will be attending Northern Colorado Pueblo University next year. 

 

Cam Softli (Eastlake) has decided on Chico State University which is Division 2.  Cam had a remarkable year at third base only committing 5 errors in 42 games.  Chico state posted a 42-19 record last year.

 

Pitcher Jordan Harrison (Gig Harbor), pitcher Ryan Otto (Mariner), pitcher Tyler Hjort (Mountlake Terrace) and infielder Josh Reed (Kamiak) will be attending Doane Unversity in Nebraska for the 2009 season.

 

 

Catcher Brad Fattore (Hazen) will be attending William and Penn University.

 

“Moving 13 players on to four year schools is a huge accomplishment and is a direct reflection that hard work pays off.  Nobody picked us to finish up as champions or even win the Northern division championship at the beginning of the season except us,” Ditter said. 

 

Former Triton Paul Gran was selected in the 8th round of the major league first year player draft.  Paul spent last season playing for the Jamestown Jammers.  You can follow Paul and the rest of the Triton minor leaguers on majorleaguebaseball.com.

 

Congrationlations to Former EdCC head Coach Tighe Dickinson on being promoted to a full-time coaching position at the University of Washington.

 

Coach Dickinson wasn’t the only former Triton up in the coaching world.  Former Triton Aaron Smith, an NWAACC champion (2002), will join the Central Florida’s coaching staff as a volunteer coach.

 

The Edmonds Community College Baseball team represented the NWAACC not only with winning the 2008 Championship but also with rewards.  First year head coach, Brad Ditter, was named Coach of the Year for the NWAACC and also the Co-Coach of the Northern Region division.  Nick Meehan was named MVP of the Northern Region hitting .421 (leading the north in Average) while Dan Ninomiya was named the NWAACC tournament MVP.   Edmonds also placed 4 guys on the 1st All-Region team and 3 on the 2nd team. 

Edmonds also named two players (Nick Pizzuto, Nick Meehan) to the All-NWAACC team and two to the 2nd team (Tyler Rice, Ben Thielsen)
